Fermented Cod Liver Oil FAQ

1) What is the difference between fermented and non-fermented cod liver oil?

Non-fermented cod liver oil (such as found in health food stores and supermarkets) is processed and refined by molecular distillation. This process strips away the naturally-occurring nutrients, so synthetic vitamins are then required to boost the nutritional value of the oil. This process also requires the oil to be heated to high temperature, affecting the stability of structure of the oil.

Fermented cod liver oil is produced by age-old traditional methods, fermented for up to 12 months in large stainless steel vats, without the use of any heat. This cold production makes the oil extremely stable. It is 100% free from synthetic vitamins and is naturally rich in EPA, DHA, Omega 3 and Vitamins A and D.

Utmost care is taken in the harvesting of this nutrient dense food.

2) What does Fermented Cod Liver Oil taste like?

Fermented Cod Liver Oil has a very strong smell and fishy taste! Other cod liver oils available are molecularly distilled, removing not only the smell and taste, but also the naturally occurring nutrients.

The strong flavour of FCLO makes it difficult for some people to take and we recommend starting off with a tiny serving size to get used to it. It can also be applied topically on the skin (such as the feet) for children who cannot stomach the flavour.

The taste can also vary greatly from batch to batch – the result of a 100% natural food that is not manufactured in any way to make it the same all the time. Sometime it is thicker than others, sometimes it might have white solid particles (fats) in it or be more gritty (more silica) than others. All are fine!

3) How do I take FCLO?

We have found the best way is to mix the FCLO with a small amount of milk, cream, warm water or freshly squeezed vegetable juices with strong flavours such as carrot, ginger and celery.

We don’t recommend taking it straight as it may sting the back of your throat, which can last up to a few hours!

4) Which flavour do you recommend for kids and for those new to FCLO?

Most agree that the Emulsified Fermented Cod Liver Oil (Peppermint or Licorice) tastes better and is gentler on the back of their throat. The plain FCLO is the most difficult to adjust to.

5) Should I take cod liver oil on an empty stomach?

Some people recommend this for superior nutrient absorption, but it can be a little overpowering. Fermented cod liver oil can be taken any time of the day. This just comes down to personal preference.

6) How do I take Blue Ice Royal Blend gel?

Due to the butter oil content, BIR gel is a thick consistency, which needs to be scooped out with a spoon. We find the best way to take it is to mix it gently into some warm water.

For the brave, it can also be taken straight off a spoon, blended into a smoothie or melted over food (like porridge).

The strong flavour of this product makes it difficult for some people to take and we recommend starting off with a tiny serving size to get used to it. It can also be applied topically on the skin (such as the feet) for children who cannot stomach the flavour.

7) How do I take Butter Oil?

See BIR blend above.

8) What is the difference between Blue Ice FCLO and Blue Ice Royal gel?

Blue Ice Fermented Cod Liver Oil is just fermented cod liver oil. (Comes in caps or liquid)
Blue Ice Royal is a blend of fermented cod liver oil and butter oil. (Comes in caps or gel)

9) Is it better to buy the Blue Ice Royal Blend or the Butter Oil and Cod Liver Oil separately?

This is just a matter of personal preference. The Blue Ice Royal Blend capsules is your most convenient option, taking them separately in liquid form your most economical in the long run.

10) What are the capsules made from?

Our capsules are made from plant cellulose, using only the best technology and the most non-evasive encapsulation process.

11) Does Fermented Cod Liver Oil go rancid?

Due to the traditional methods used in manufacture, Fermented Cod Liver Oil is extremely stable. This means that it is very rare for it to go rancid and has a long shelf life of over 2 years.

12) Do I need to keep the Fermented Cod Liver Oil in the fridge?

No, but if left out of the fridge it will continue to ferment, making the taste stronger over time.
The Emulsified Fermented Cod Liver Oil is best kept in a dark cupboard as refrigeration causes the oil to separate from the other ingredients – requiring it to be stirred before use – rather messy!

13) Do you ship with a cold pack?

No. All our oils are nitrogen flushed, which means that the oxygen was removed when the jar was sealed. This ensures safe transit even in warm weather.
