Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) is a type of elm tree native to eastern North America. The inner bark has long been used in traditional Native American medicine to treat wounds and gastrointestinal ailments. Slippery Elm is commonly used today in Western herbal medicine to help alleviate symptoms in the gastrointestinal tract.
Slippery elm is a demulcent, meaning it has the capacity to coat mucus membranes in the oesophagus, stomach, and intestines. This not only helps to move things along but also works to calm inflammation and irritation in the digestive tract.
Slippery elm is a bit like an internal bandage for inflammation or ulcerations anywhere along the digestive tract. This means it can provide relief for sore throats, coughs, GERD, Crohn's disease, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and diarrhea.
Aside from the mucilage, slippery elm is also packed with nutrients. It is not only a potent source of antioxidants but also contains a host of minerals, such as magnesium, iron, calcium, potassium, as well as vitamin C and a family of B vitamins, to name a few. It's no wonder that this herb provides a powerful medicinal punch!
Mix into water, make into a herbal tea, or mix into food.
Start by mixing a teaspoon of the powder into a thin smooth paste with cold water and then pour over the boiling water. Flavour with spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg. This makes an excellent drink in cases of irritation of the mucous membrane of the stomach and intestines.
Store at room temperature.
