What is the difference between collagen and gelatin? icon
The main difference between collagen and gelatin is in the molecular weight. Collagen is lower in weight and size than gelatin and can easily be mixed into both hot and cold liquid (so you can add collagen to herbal teas etc. and it will dissolve beautifully). Gelatin is derived from collagen and has the ability to congeal liquids, making it perfect for making homemade jelly (but don't add this one to your cup of tea or as it cools you will get thick gelatinous tea!)
What is the difference between fermented and virgin cod liver oil? icon
Both Fermented and Virgin Cod Liver Oils are cold processed and never undergo the high heat processing (molecular distillation) that regular fish oils are processed by.
- Fermented Cod Liver Oil in Australia is made using the process of enzymes and time (fermentation) to break down the cell structure enabling the oils to be released. The frozen livers are placed into large stainless steel vats and covered with salt water and enzymes which begin the process of fermentation. The oil gets released from the fish and rises to the top of the vat. It is then scooped off, filtered, tested for purity and bottled.
- Virgin Cod Liver Oil is made using the process of temperature change (freeze-fracturing) which uses change in temperature to fracture the cell structure, enabling the oils to be released. The fish livers are frozen and then as they come to room temperature, the cells rupture, releasing the oil. This oil is then filtered several times, tested for purity and then bottled.
Will I get too much Vitamin A if I take both freeze dried liver and cod liver oil? icon
As long as you are taking the recommended serving size of freeze dried liver and cod liver oil (approx. 6 caps liver or 1 tsp powder and approximately 2ml cod liver oil) you are unlikely to go over your recommended daily amount, which is approximately 3,000IU (or 900cmg per day for adults).
Chronic Vitamin A toxicity can occur when you regularly ingest around ten times your recommended daily intake over the course of months to years. Once the overconsumption of Vitamin A is stopped, people generally make a full recovery.
Symptoms of Vitamin A toxicity include muscle and bone pain, headaches, nausea, and hair loss. If you are concerned, please arrange a blood test to check your Vitamin A levels.
What about wasteful packaging when ordering online? icon
Shipping products across Australia can result in a lot of wasteful packaging. Here at Thankfully Nourished we are doing our best to minimise this and still get the products to you safely.
The light packing pellets in your box are made from corn starch and are totally compostable. Just tip them into your compost bin (or even onto the garden bed) and water them in. The green tinted bubble wrap is an 'eco-wrap' and will biodegrade 10 x faster than regular plastic.
The bubble wrap is only used where essential to ensure you receive the product intact. Australia Post requires each parcel sent through it’s system to easily withstand a 10m drop. Paper and corn starch packaging is used as much as possible.
